Welcome to Tideswell, Derbyshire

CastletonTideswell is a large, ancient village situated in Derbyshire and in the very heart of the Peak District. It is 6 miles east of Buxton and about the same number of miles west of Bakewell.

Tideswell dates back earlier than Roman times and at Doomsday it was part of the enormous parish of Hope. In 1207 it was granted to Thomas Armiger and in 1251 a market charter was given to the village. TideswellTideswell became a thriving market town selling local produce and it held 5 important fairs a year. The village also became a principle market for wool and lead and rapidly grew in prosperity and size.

Today in Tideswell you can still sample local cuisine and ales and the village is still noted for its annual well dressing. It is one of the prettiest villages in the peak district and famous for its warm reception to visitors.

TideswellThe main feature of the village is the magnificent 14th Century church (called the cathedral of the peak). Incredibly no major external alterations have been made to the church since 1400 and it looks little different today than it did 600 years ago. It’s a must see venue for all visitors to the peak district – let alone
those who stay and visit Tideswell.

TideswellTideswell now offers a superb central location to explore the majestic peak district. The village is small enough to experience that ‘local very friendly atmosphere’ but large enough to provide an infrastructure comprising of shops, pubs, post office, chemist and other ‘essentialeveryday needs’.

Tideswell Well Dressing

Tidedswell is very well recognised for its annual well dressing. This is an ancient custom of decorating the village wells with flower petals to give thanks for water and life. The well dressing in the Village takes place in June with the whole week of celebration. This carnival is the highlight of the week when the whole village seems to dress up – well worth a visit at this time.
